Improv Hand Quilting With Heidi Parkes (2)

  • Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Class Fee: $145/ WMQFA Members (with member code); $170/Non Members

Supplies Checklist

Workshop Description: Learn to quilt by hand, following your intuition and improvising as you go. In this class, you can make a 'wholecloth' quilt, using a single cut of fabric as your quilt top, or you can use an existing quilt top.

This workshop is both conceptual and technical. Heidi will begin with a trunk show, during which she will explain both why and how she quilted as she did. Stitch density, exposed or hidden knots, overlapping lines of quilting, and color choices will be expanded upon. Heidi loves to quilt with pearl size 8 thread for its high visibility and strength. Students can work with an existing quilt top or a 'wholecloth' single piece of fabric. We will cover basting, quilting with a tabletop and a heavy book to create tension, hand positioning, hand care, thimble use, and a variety of ways to balance planning with improv. We will not use pens to 'mark,' our fabric, but will learn a few tricks to anticipate our stitching. Heidi is an expert at creating areas of visual interest and activating the quilt top with the quilting functioning like a 'drawing' on the surface of the fabric. Students will not complete their quilt in class, but will get a solid foundation on improvisation and hand quilting.ing.

From the use of one point perspective as a compositional tool in Renaissance Italy, to the fantastic Op Art creations of the  1960s, artists have been finding ways to manipulate the standard square based grid for centuries as a means of introducing space and movement into two dimensional design. This workshop will introduce students to some simple ways to enrich designs by stretching, warping, and re-imagining the grid.

Workshop  will include discussion of the use of the grid in art history and quilt history, exercises on paper which will demonstrate simple ways to manipulate the grid, and open work time during which students can try out some basic templates provided by the teacher, and work on creating their own.

Textile & Mixed Media Collage With Linda Sweek

Textile & Mixed Media Collage With Linda Sweek

  • Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Collage – “A piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and  pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing,” Webster Dictionary.

From working with treasured textiles, favorite fabrics and embroidery stitches, to the process of  constructing artwork intuitively and mindfully, textile collage is a great way to develop your own artistic voice.

You might have collected fabrics and threads, hoops and needles, dyes and paints, artist books and kits. You’ve dipped into lots of different textile art mediums but you want to develop your own authentic style. Textile collage is a great technique to help you achieve this. You can create a collage to suit your personality and passions. Collage is  liberating, “arranging things to explore the juxtaposition of color, tone and pattern.”

In this workshop, we will begin by looking at a variety of collages to become inspired on ways to layer and enhance collage work. Then we will begin to create two collages – the first will be a

predetermined collage in a kit form that I will provide. The second collage will be your own design

Rug Hooking a Padula: a 4-Week Rug Hooking Series with Joyce Krueger

  • Google Calendar ICS

4 day series on Consecutive Saturdays in 2022:

January 15 (9-1) January 22 (9-4), January 29 (9-4), and February 5 (9-4)

Rug hooking started on the east coast of North America, from Labrador, Canada down to the Carolina’s. Popular for at least the past 200 years, rug hooking has spread across the United States, Canada and many other countries. Today, rug hookers are exploring new materials and new techniques. This experimentation, combined with knowledge and respect for the past, allows rug hooking to be primitive or modern with rug hookers creating stunning pieces of art.

Rug hooking is both an art form and a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of fabric through a woven backing such as monks’ cloth, linen or rug warp. Wool fabric, that has been dyed and cut into strips, is used when making a rug or mat. A tool called a hook is used to pull the fabric strips through the backing to make a loop. Together, all of these loops make a rug.

In the series of classes, students will start with a kit that includes a pre-designed mat, then students will design and hook their own mat in later classes. By having four classes over four weeks, students can hook between classes.

  • First Class: January 15 (9-1) Students will learn ‘how to hook’ on a 9” x 9" mat with a Padula motif. A Padula is a simple flower. The kit will include the pattern, a hook and all the wool needed to complete the mat.

  • Second Class: January 22 (9-4), Students will continue to hook the Padula mat. We will also discuss designing and color planning one’s own mat.

  • Third Class: January 29 (9-4) Students will draw their own design for an 18” x 18" mat/wall hanging/pillow and transfer the design to the backing. We will also decide what colors to use.

  • Fourth Class: February 5 (9-4) Joyce will have wool for students to start the mat/wall hanging/pillow they designed. Students will also learn to cut all the wool needed for their project.
