9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Class Fee: $160/ WMQFA Members (with member code); $185/Non Members

Class Description:

With deceptive simplicity, skilled English embroiderers worked the finest Flemish linen, called “lawne” with black silk. Blackwork embroidery decorated royal household linens as well as items of clothing like neckerchiefs worn by Henry VIII; a pair of sleeves owned by his third wife, Jane Seymour; and panels for Queen Elizabeth's kirtles, the bodices and skirts worn under her gowns.

Blackwork, also known as Spanish Work, is a type of counted thread embroidery thought to have originated in Spain. It was brought to England by Catherine of Aragon, who married Prince Arthur, the eldest son of King Henry VII. In spite of this pedigree, new evidence and research have shown that North Africa, particularly Morocco, may have been the true birthplace of this style of embroidery.

Modern Blackwork is traditionally stitched in black thread on white even-weave fabric but is often worked in multiple or other single colors, where repeating patterns are stitched with varying densities. Given the fact the stitches themselves are relatively simple – the vast array of complex patterns that can be created is amazing.

Start your Blackwork journey here. In the morning Kari will explain basic techniques while allowing you to practice some stitches, on 14 count Aida, that can be used for Blackwork. You will also learn how to create shading by both varying the weight of the threads and the density of the stitching. In the afternoon you will put these into practice on a piece designed especially for this class.

Sunday, April 13, 2025

10am-4pm

Class Fee: $175/ WMQFA Members (with member code); $200/Non Members

Workshop Description:

Quilts can squish into backpacks and unfurl into art galleries, but sometimes there’s a thrill in stretching them taught, just like a painting. This workshop will teach you to use a wooden frame and staples to display your quilt ‘stretched canvas style.’ You will also get an introduction to several exciting quiltmaking techniques:

  • Layered quilts: have a transparent layer on top, revealing fabric and thread beneath

  • Patchwork: involves ‘piecing’ small segments of fabric together to expand into a full-sized quilt top

  • ‘Quilt as you go’: combines the acts of ‘piecing’ and ‘quilting’ (fusing your quilt top and batting/insides) into one efficient and unique-looking quilt

  • Embroidery: Maybe you want to skip the quilting phase and just frame an embroidery

  • Freeform Applique: Working with a base fabric, you can apply more fabric on top with raw edges or turned edges to create a complex composition

Students will receive access to Heidi’s on-demand version of this class in advance of our workshop, so they can practice ahead, or refresh their memories after we gather in person.**

In addition to standard quilting supplies, students will need a couple wooden frames, staples, and a staple gun in class.

**If a student needs a refund after they have received the PDF for Framed Quilts, they will still be charged the $85 value of the pdf content.

Monday - Friday, May 12-16, 2025

10am-4pm each day

Class Fee: $950 WMQFA Members/$1,000 Non Members

Workshop Description:

Have you ever tried to keep a paper diary? Sometimes it’s easier with cloth! Heidi will lead students in creating a Diary Quilt in this 5-day class. Students will receive a wealth of information in advance, with videos on handwork techniques, and a welcome video to spark creativity and offer guidance in collecting and packing fabrics. Quilt top construction will focus on hand piecing, but Heidi will also do a few sewing machine demos in class. Construction choices like this add to the diary effect by chronicling color preferences, found fabrics, trades, and daily whims around stitching with a machine, or by hand.

Heidi will insert strategies for efficient stitching, ways to balance abstraction and precision, and will guide students in riding the line between personal and public. A Diary Quilt can reframe the past, record the present, and represent dreams for the future. Different from a memoir, diaries are tools, holders of secrets, and spaces for play.

Heidi’s clear, yet gentle teaching style allows students to follow their own pace, reflect, intuit, and ultimately: create their own unique quilt top. On the morning of our final class together, we will make plans for quilting and discuss strategy around quilting style, thread color, and overall layout.

Participants will receive a surprise sewing kit personally curated by Heidi!

**If a student needs a refund after they have received the PDF for Framed Quilts or Diary Quilting, they should still be charged the $85 value of the pdf content.

Time: 9:00 to 4:00 pm each day, with a break for lunch

Class Fee: $350/Non-Members; $325/ Members (with membership discount code)

Class Description:

Circles can be found throughout the natural world and in human designs from diverse cultures across millennia. Circles appeal to us on so many levels – they are simple and elegant; they’re curved, organic, and smooth, with no sharp corners; they evoke a comforting sense of completeness and totality; they’re in the hugs that embrace us and the nests that protect baby birds. Circles are as familiar as the dot of an “I” or the period at the end of a sentence. They come to us in images of the Earth from space. Circles are as tiny as a subatomic particle and as large as a black hole. In this workshop, we explore and create a sampler or small art quilt of circular motifs in bead embroidery. Working with a wide variety of beads, we will learn, design, and stitch a diverse range of circular forms that could also be used in future stitching on art quilts, garments, and other fiber art.

$25/ Members | $30/ Nonmembers

Rebecca Devaney’s lecture will tell the fascinating story of how luxury textiles and fashion became woven into the fabric of Paris. The intriguing history of luxury textiles and fashion is revealed through the geography of the winding streets and wide boulevards of Paris. Travelling in Paris from the elegant Opéra district to Le Sentier, once the bustling garment district, we will meet kings, politicians, spies, cloth merchants, milliners, glove-makers, feather-workers, embroiderers and the fiercely independent Midinettes.

Note: To train at the prestigious École Lesage is to be invited to share in more than a century and a half of ever-renewed enthusiasm, talent and expertise. It means getting a chance to learn the techniques mastered – and, in some cases, invented – by one of the world’s greatest embroidery houses.

This lecture will be held via Zoom only. An emailed invitation, with links, will be provided to registrants approximately one to two weeks prior to the tour.

This two-day workshop begins by introducing all the stitches that make up the backbone of bead embroidery—those stitches most commonly used in contemporary beadwork on fabric. After initially exploring the basic stitches of bead embroidery, students advance to learn ways to beautifully and securely incorporate larger beads, buttons, and cabochons into their fiber work. They also explore a variety of edge stitches and fringe techniques while continuing to work on a sampler for future reference and inspiration. The class culminates with students beginning to develop their own bead embroidery style while exploring designs that range from sparsely-stitched individual beads to densely beaded focal areas. Students have opportunities to explore known variations on introduced stitches as well as develop their own visual vocabulary of bead embroidery.

Improv Hand Quilting With Heidi Parkes (2)

  • Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Class Fee: $145/ WMQFA Members (with member code); $170/Non Members

Supplies Checklist

Workshop Description: Learn to quilt by hand, following your intuition and improvising as you go. In this class, you can make a 'wholecloth' quilt, using a single cut of fabric as your quilt top, or you can use an existing quilt top.

This workshop is both conceptual and technical. Heidi will begin with a trunk show, during which she will explain both why and how she quilted as she did. Stitch density, exposed or hidden knots, overlapping lines of quilting, and color choices will be expanded upon. Heidi loves to quilt with pearl size 8 thread for its high visibility and strength. Students can work with an existing quilt top or a 'wholecloth' single piece of fabric. We will cover basting, quilting with a tabletop and a heavy book to create tension, hand positioning, hand care, thimble use, and a variety of ways to balance planning with improv. We will not use pens to 'mark,' our fabric, but will learn a few tricks to anticipate our stitching. Heidi is an expert at creating areas of visual interest and activating the quilt top with the quilting functioning like a 'drawing' on the surface of the fabric. Students will not complete their quilt in class, but will get a solid foundation on improvisation and hand quilting.ing.
