Workshop Description:

Learn how to hand block print using hand carved wooden blocks!

Join Ammu from House of Amu for a fun and creative block printing workshop at WMQFA!

Dive into the vibrant world of hand block printing using hand-carved wooden blocks crafted by artisans in India.

You'll explore how to gather inspiration, create designs, and experiment with patterns to print your own unique  table runner—no templates, just your imagination. Whether you're a total newbie or an art enthusiast, this laid-back afternoon promises laughter, creativity, and a chance to play with paint (and maybe laugh at my jokes).

Bring a friend, and let’s make something beautiful together.

Block printing is one of the oldest forms of textile printing. Block printing uses wooden
blocks that are hand carved by artisans in India, to use as stamps to create prints on
fabric.

Ancient History Detective Virtual Lunchtime Lecture with Diane Newbury

Artist Biography:

I’m Diane Newbury, a very happy mid-life career changer. My prior working life was all about finance, computer systems, writing, and training, but now I get to pursue a life-long passion.

My love affair with museums and ancient things dates back a long, long way. My husband reminds me that no matter where we’ve gone in the world, I “drag” him to a museum or to some crumbling archaeological ruin.

In 2014, I completed my Master’s degree in Anthropology (emphasis: Archaeology) and Museum Studies through a joint program between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM). My thesis was based on a beautiful collection of archaeological Peruvian featherwork artifacts housed at MPM, as well as museums in New York and Peru.

Through my thesis work, I found a new passion for research. I am now studying and documenting a very large collection of Peruvian archaeological textiles at the MPM and a smaller collection here at the WMQFA.

Politics & Patriotism: Textiles from the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection Virtual Chat

Just in time for Independence Day! Join us on Friday, June 26 at 12pm (CDT) for a virtual chat with staff and students from the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection. The HLATC holds numerous textiles related to American politics, from Federal-era coverlets featuring American eagles, to the earliest presidential campaign ephemera from the 1840s, to a magnificent quilt documenting political gatherings in Progressive-era Wisconsin. A curatorial team from the School of Human Ecology at University of Wisconsin-Madison will share their research on these and other treasures they conducted in preparation for an upcoming exhibition.
